Winter fishing in Florida around the Sanibel – Captiva area is the time of year that shrimp is the bait of choice. When the north wind blows and the water temps drop, most species get very sluggish in the cooler water. The fish don’t require as much food and being cold blooded they are less likely to chase lively baits such as pilchards or threadfin herring. I’ve found during my charters that a Texas rigged shrimp or a jig tipped with a piece of shrimp sitting on the bottom does the trick. A piece of ladyfish or other cut bait is also a great choice any time of year. Snook, redfish, trout, sheephead, flounder, sharks and tarpon are the most common fish caught in the Pine Island Sound area with the cut baits.
