The fishing community & humanity lost a great friend when George Close of Kiel WI passed away on March 30th. I first met George at the Midwest Fly Show in Chicago in the mid 90’s. I had a booth promoting my charters & George was tying flies for Umpqua across from me. Over the 3 day show we developed a friendship. George & wife Betty visited Ft Myers the next winter and bought a winter home here. George worked for the phone company after a stint in the military. They raised 3 children and enjoyed competing in field trials with their spaniels. George & Betty also traveled out west to the Federation of Fly Fishers conclave for many years. Both were avid birders also. George was an expert fly tier, always willing to share his knowledge. He was very humble and had some of his flies in the Federation book for many years. I will dearly miss my friend.
